I love watermelon.
It’s been many years since I was a boy playing in the backyard of my childhood home in Gastonia, but I still remember how good watermelon tasted on a summer day. My mother would bring me a freshly-cut slice, and I would bite into it immediately.The juices would stream down my chin and onto my shirt. My friends and I would see who could spit the seeds the furthest. I can’t eat a slice today without smiling and thinking about the many seed-spitting contests I won.
Take a moment and think about your fondest summertime memories. Maybe enjoying a slice of watermelon brings back the same sort of happy memories for you as it does for me. Perhaps it was finding the perfect seashell as you walked along the beach or bobbing up and down as you rode the horse on the carousel. Now, imagine if your only memories are ones of anger, pain and darkness. Too often, this is the reality for the boys and girls at Baptist Children’s Homes (BCH). Remembrances dominated by traumatic abuse and neglect are the only memories many of BCH’s children can recall. For them, a small enjoyment such as biting into a juicy slice of watermelon is more meaningful than you and I can comprehend.
Unlike most of us, these boys and girls are not able to reflect on their pasts with a smile or any warm feelings. As you have faithfully done in times’ past, today is your opportunity to do something about it.
