The three sisters were starving and shivering...
Temperatures outside were freezing. Elizabeth, Mary and Carly, ages 7, 5 and 3, did their best to stay warm, but there was no electricity in the home except from one drop cord that ran to the house next door. Their parents were drinking at a nearby bar. The girls were all alone eating cold, dry cereal — it was all they had to eat.
The Department of Social Services removed the sisters from the home that same day and brought them to Baptist Children’s Homes (BCH). They arrived at the cottage at 10 p.m. with only the tank tops, shorts and flip flops they were wearing. The cottage parents, Adam and Sian, quickly brought them inside from the cold. While his wife ran warm baths for the girls, Adam made grilled cheese sandwiches and soup. It was the best meal they'd eaten in a long time.
Surrounded by their cottage parents and the other children, the sisters knew they were not alone any longer.
The Food Roundup is essential for providing children, like Elizabeth, Mary and Carly, the food they've gone too long without. So many boys and girls could never count on eating regularly before coming to live at BCH. It’s the reason why the annual Food Roundup means so much to the hundreds of children and families you help us serve every year.
How Does the Food Roundup Help?
When churches, businesses and other community friends unite for the annual Food Roundup, it feeds hundreds and hundreds of boys and girls living at Baptist Children's Homes like Maggie. When you are feeding BCH cottages across North Carolina that can have as many as 12 to 16 residents, it takes a lot of food to fill hungry bellies.
What is this Year's Goal?
We need you to help collect $400,000 in nonperishable food, supplies and gift cards. This equals approximately 700,000 meals and snacks -- enough to feed them for a year!
When Do We Collect and How Do We Deliver our Donations?
Promote and collect throughout the month of April. You can deliver your collections at designated statewide pick-up points. BCH will begin picking up donations from collection points in late April. You will need to find out the last day your collection point will accept food deliveries prior to the starting date. DATE COMING SOON.
