Oak Ranch's Michael Learns About Courage

12.10.2007

After participating in an equine therapy session with horse expert Terri Dussault regarding the theme of "courage," Oak Ranch resident Michael wrote an essay about what he learned: "I am writing a paper about courage, and the first time I had courage. One time I was going to my friend's house and there was a big dude messing with my friend. So then I told him to stop but he kept pushing him. So I told him to pick on somebody his own size. So then he came over to me and got in my face so I had to be brave. I knew I had to be strong and not be scared because all he was, was a bully. Even when someone is bigger than you does not mean you should be scared of them. I learned a lesson. If someone is bullying you or somebody else, don’t be scared to tell somebody. You have to be determined not to be scared."

Residents Learn About Courage, Attend Lipizzaner Horse Show

12.10.2007

The residents of Oak Ranch watched the magnificent white stallions of the Lipizzaner Show perform in Fayetteville last week. The day before the show, the boys participated in their weekly equine therapy session led by horse expert Terri Dussault. The session theme was "courage" and the boys learned how the grandparents of these great horses were rescued from advancing armies in WWII by none other then Gen. Patton and how this took a lot of courage on the part of both man and horse. If the horses had fallen into enemy hands the breed would have been lost forever. The residents were then asked to write a story about a time in their lives when they had to have courage. All the stories written by the boys held great meaning. Attending the event made the next lesson with the horses at Oak Ranch even more powerful as the boys imagined sitting on their horses properly just like the Lipizzaner riders at the show. A fabulous time was had by all and we would like to thank Smart Energy Solutions and the Jonesboro Rotary for sponsoring the residents’ attendance of the show.
