More @ Four Receives High Rating

03.31.2008

Lindsey Brummett and Hannah Vinson are teachers at one of Child Development Center's More @ Four classrooms in Thomasville. The ladies just completed the two year Environmental Rating Assessment given by Smart Start. Their scores were excellent, which means their classroom is of the highest quality and their teaching methods are new and developmentally appropriate. Congratulations on your achievement! CDC currently has two More @ Four classes that run with the Davidson County School System's schedule. These programs are state funded and are attended by qualifying children. There is no charge to the parent. We are now taking applications for the Fall. If you are interested, please pick up an application at CDC or visit the Smart Start office in Lexington.

Special Ministries Hosts First 25th Anniversary Party for Dr. Blackwell

03.26.2008

BCH president Michael C Blackwell was the guest of honor at Fleshman Pratt on Tuesday as he celebrated his first 25th anniversary party with Special Ministries. Present were our youngest and tiniest clients served by BCH...our children from Weekday Education representing Fleshman Pratt, Robert Idol CDC, and Gregg Children's Center. Also present were our oldest clients served by BCH...our adults from the Developmental Disabilities Ministry representing Hinkle House in Winston-Salem and The Asheboro Home. Everyone enjoyed refreshments, fellowship, and DANCING, if you want to call it that! We did the Hokey Pokey, The Chicken Dance, The Tootie Ta Ta, and Father Abraham. Dr. Blackwell received handprints from every child and almost every DDM resident. The visual of tiny hands and large hands really gives light to the range of ages that we serve at BCH. Dr. Blackwell was appreciative of his gift and complimentary of our wonderful staff members from Special Ministries. He talked with the children and DDM adults and held a couple of our babies. It was truly an exciting event. Congratulations Dr. Blackwell for 25 years of exceptional service to Baptist Children's Homes!

CDC Promotes Reading to Children

03.26.2008

The Child Development Center in Thomasville has worked hard in March to promote reading to their preschoolers. Stacie Womack, lead teacher, has invited parents into the classroom throughout the month to read to the class. It's always fun to have a special guest (especially your mom or dad!) come into the classroom and read your favorite book to everyone. Mrs. Stacie also held a read-a-thon where parents were encouraged to read to their child each night. Each day, Mrs. Stacie wrote the names of the books on a poster so that the children could see how many books had been read. Currently, 86 books have been read and there are still a few more days left in March. The children really are excited about their long list of books! This excitement really promotes the love of reading, which is so important to develop at the preschool age for success in "big" school down the road.

Easter Egg Hunt at CDC!

03.25.2008

For the last few years, the FBLA from East Davidson High School in Thomasville has come to the Child Development Center to hide Easter eggs for our three and four-year-olds. The boys and girls had a blast as they searched high and low on the playgrounds for colorful Easter eggs. The high school students gave out candy for all the children to enjoy afterwards. Thank you EDHS FBLA for providing a fun time for our children in celebration of Easter!

Gregg Center Presents Mile of Pennies

03.13.2008

In February, sixteen of Gregg Center's first and second graders collected 8,000 pennies for BCH's Mile of Pennies campaign. Teachers Amie Edminson and Sara Smith decided that the month of February was appropriate in celebration of President's Day and Abe Lincoln's birthday. To signify these events, the children presented the pennies to BCH president Dr. Michael C. Blackwell and spoke with him about how they sacrificed college money and treat money given to them by their grandparents to contribute to this cause. The children learned a valuable lesson: Giving back to the community, even in small ways, has great impact.
