Sarah finished first during the reading competition. All of our participants enjoyed the games as well as the staff members.

Odum Home Participates in "Runway for Success"

08.15.2008

On August 5 and 6, John, Tremaine, and Tyler from Odum Home's Latta Harnett cottage and Odum Home residential services coordinator Kathy Locklear participated in this year's "Runway for Success." This year's event was held in Charlotte and was an awesome experience for the boys. The group was able to tour Troutman Motors and dine at Troutman’s Barbecue where they received a gift bag. The boys enjoyed the opportunity to talk with proprietors Mr. and Mrs. Troutman along with their family. Residents were also given a tour inside of Joe Gibbs Racing. Joe's son J.D. Gibbs spoke to them about his father, his faith, and the racing industry. The children were fascinated as they asked questions and talked with J. D. and staff members about racing and cars. The children then enjoyed their meal at Lancaster’s Barbecue. Amy Gregory and Barbara Lopez took the group on a tour of NASCAR Technical Institute. Missy from Motor Racing Outreach gave a complimentary tour of Lowes Motor Speedway The children and staff members from Odum Home are thankful to the Tom Davis Foundation for this year's opportunity. The foundation funds Runway each year for children and staff members to learn about different jobs, careers and industries.

Fellowship with the Hawkins Family and Friends

08.05.2008

On August 2, Odum Home boys spent the day at Jungle Rapids Water Park in Wilmington. They shared great fellowship with the Hawkins family and other friends. Danny Hawkins serves as a BCH director of development. On August 3 they were joined by Odum Home girls and accompanied Mr. Hawkins to Ogden Baptist Church for a morning worship service. Mr. Hawkins was the guest speaker, the Odum Home children’s choir sang, and a couple of the children talked about how Baptist Children's Homes has changed their lives. After the service, lunch was served and the youth played games. M. L. Boone from Mt. Zion Baptist Church, M.L. as he is affectionately called, invited the youth down to Sunset Beach Sunday afternoon for fun on the beach and treats from Julie’s Rentals. The treats consisted of body boards, wheelies, umbrellas and chairs for the beach. They also enjoyed ice cream. It was wonderful to see how much fun the youth were having. Even though it put us late getting back it was well worth it. We would like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Hawkins, the Ogden Church family, M.L. Boone for a great time of fellowship and laughter. Also, thanks to the BCH child care workers Minnie, LaShic, Katina, and Pamela for adding to the children’s laughter by riding wheelies and even trying to bury themselves in the sand!
