Odum Home Visits Carowinds
07.31.2008
On Thursday July 10th, staff members and children from Odum Home went to Carowinds in Charlotte. The children enjoyed riding the Drop Zone and huge roller coasters like the Vortex. Some got soaking wet on the water rides. Everyone had a great time and some of the children enjoyed experiences they never had before. The children were excited as they told staff members who about all the rides and the food they ate. Some had never been to Charlotte were amazed at all traffic and the tall buildings. Just watching their excitement gave us great enjoyment. It’s all a part of the mission of helping hurting children...healing broken families.

07.31.2008
July 21-25, Odum Home children participated in a sports camp sponsored by Deep Impact Missions Group. The group provided lunch each day and the children learned basic skills for basketball, soccer, kickball, and volleyball. Residents were also able to fellowship in two worship services at the worship center in Red Springs on July 22 and 24. At the close of the sports camp the missions group treated the children and staff members to an afternoon of fun at Fantasy Lake in White lake. There they enjoyed the diving boards, banana water slide, the Tarzan rope, paddle boating, and swimming
Rockfish Camp Creates Memorable Experience
07.31.2008
Boys from Latta Harnett Cottage at Odum Home went to Rockfish camp to participate in several exercises. The day offered them a variety of challenge courses including water sports and praise and worship. "We really wanted to build the teamwork and leadership skills within the group," says Kathy Locklear, Odum Home Residential Support Supervisor. "The counselors were able to incorporate the challenge with knowing Christ and how he can change your life at the end of each course." Sleeping in the tree houses was the greatest challenge for the staff. The children and staff enjoyed many memorable moments during their time at Rockfish. Latta Harnett boys were able to learn and meet every challenge as a team. You go boys!
Bear Swamp Baptist Offers VBS to Odum
07.24.2008
Odum Home residents particpated in Vacation Bible School. This year’s theme was Outrigger Island - Surf’s up, so grab your surfboard and head for the waves! During VBS 2008 the children learned to speak, know, and live Gods' truth aloha style. (The theme was based on Psalm 86:11). It is wonderful to have our friends from Bear Swamp Baptist Church to present VBS year after year. The youth and staff enjoyed the mission stories, music, and crafts. We were also treated to a home-cooked meal. Thank you to all the dedicated members of Bear Swamp Baptist Church who continue to make VBS successful.
Odum Residents Enjoy Girls Night Out
07.24.2008
The girls and staff members at Indian Memorial Cottage were invited to a sleepover at Jan and Danny Hawkins' home. Danny Hawkins is BCH's Director of Development, Southeastern Area. The girls really enjoyed this trip. Mr. Danny turned his home over to his wife Jan and Odum Home child care workers Kathy and Rachel and the ten girls. They enjoyed the evening doing "girls' stuff" painting finger and toe nails along with lots of fellowship. Some had their hair cut and eye brows waxed. Mrs. Hawkins took the group to Jungle Rapids and the water park. They played games at the arcade and rode the go-carts. The girls enjoyed a picnic on the beach. The group also took a ferry ride to Southfort and for some this was their first ferry ride. Later they took a tour of downtown Wilmington, NC. The girls enjoyed Mr. Hawkins cooking. When we asked the group how was their trip they replied it was a "blast" and an "awesome" time. Mr. & Mrs. Hawkins, thank you for your hospitality and making this a fun time for the group.
Odum Home Residents Camp at Morrow Mountain
07.01.2008
Latta Harnett Cottage boys went camping June 23-25 at Morrow Mountain. For some of them this was their first time camping. They enjoyed the hiking, fishing, and sitting around the campfire telling scary stories while roasting marshmallows. Indian Memorial Cottage girls went June 25-27 and they too enjoyed the camping trip. The girls also enjoyed learning how to break down and pack up the tents. They also enjoyed the stories about Kron House and Dr. Kron. Kron was known for traveling days at a time, making house calls to those bitterly sick. Hailed as a frontier hero, Morrow Mountain State Park built a renovation of where his house was and now offers tours. Odum Home's Kenneth Cole stated it was probably one of the best trips he has made to Morrow Mt. and he enjoyed instructing and teaching the children camping skills.
