UNC Pembroke's Earth Day Benefit Helps Odum Home
05.06.2008
University of North Carolina at Pembroke participated in the National celebration of Earth Day intended to inspire awareness and appreciation for the environment. As part of the celebration they held a food drive for Odum Home. The admission to the multi-complex dining room was five cans of food per person. The cans of food collected will benefit the food drive at Odum Home. The benefit served to help the children be aware of the concerns for the environment. Teachers and staff along with the children enjoyed a buffet with a variety of dishes ranging from beef, chicken stir-fry, subs, and desserts.
Cookout Fellowship and Basketball
05.05.2008
For the past three years, Pastor Matthews and Co-Pastor Matthews of Rock Hill Baptist Church of Lumberton have faithfully committed to Vespers Services on Wednesdays at Odum Home. The Rock Hill Church family came out and fired up the grills serving up an afternoon of hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken, baked beans, and banana pudding. Pastor Matthews had promised the children he would bring his church family and have a cookout and play some basketball. The children were ready to take on the challenge; the boys and girls team won both games. It was a beautiful day we had the weather was wonderful. Thank you Rock Hill church family for your love and support of children and staff at Odum Home.
Tarheel Baptist Church Brings Bikes to Odum Home Residents
05.02.2008
Just when the children at Odum Home were cleaning up from their day of Operation In As Much events on April 19, part two of their special day began. (Matthew 25:40) The children at Odum Home sat in anticipation as the members of Tarheel Baptist Church gathered to unload their trailer full of brand new bycylces at 1:00 that afternoon. Back in February, residential services coordinator Kathy Locklear and the children were invited to a 11:00 worship service at Tarheel Baptist Church. Ms. Locklear was the speaker, Odum Home resident John shared his life experience, the Odum Home choir sang, and our Mime Team did a dramatic expression of worship in dance. And during a wonderful lunch and time of fellowship, the children expressed that they would like to have a bike to ride at Odum Home. Words cannot describe the smiles on the children’s faces and the laughter as the men unlocked the trailer and began to unload the bicycles and helmets. Even more wonderful was the joy we saw on the Tarheel members faces as they witnessed the children’s response and watched them as they each received their brand new bikes with shouts of thanks as they rode off. Bicycles were everywhere! Thank you Tarheel Baptist Church for your love of children. Jesus said in as much as you have done it for the least of these my brethren you have done it for me.

All proceeds from the benefit will go to Odum Home. Odum Home director Valerie Wright along with residents John and Amairani attended the gala affair. Both youth spoke about their life experience since coming to Baptist Children's Homes. The dinner was a traditional Mexcian meal that included beef and chicken fajitas along with rice and beans. Then John and Amairani enjoyed the Latin music and dancing. Valerie received a Sombrero and necklace.
