Mills Home Friends of Children Day

05.28.2008

On May 24, Mills Home held their spring Friends of Children event. The campus was host to more than 40 church groups with 450 or more participants. Even though the day started with rain, no one’s spirit was dampened. Everyone was eager to get their assignments and begin working! Work projects included cleaning all cottages inside and out. This included washing windows to planting flowers. Some workers did not want to quit working to take a break or even go to lunch! All office buildings on campus received a good cleaning from top to bottom, including the Family Duplexes. One youth group washed all agency vehicles. Other groups walked the entire campus picking up sticks and other debris. Other groups worked on weeding around signs and mulching all flowerbeds on campus. Weekday Education also benefited from this work day. Groups were sent to paint/seal lumber on the playground, weed and mulch flowerbeds. When groups completed their work, they had the opportunity to go to the museum and/or to the Robert Doares art exhibit. A delicious lunch of hot dogs and all the trimmings was provided by Nancy Dooley and South Elm Baptist Church. After the meal we all gathered in the gym for a special program. Several residents sang for the group and one resident gave his testimony. A survey of the crowd indicated that at least 75% of the people had never been to a workday at a BCH campus. All indicated that they would return for the next workday. Many good friends were made Saturday.

Another First for Mills Home Resident

05.28.2008

Thomasville and Lexington Chambers of Commerce held the first Youth Leadership Davidson County program. Sixteen high school juniors throughout Davidson County completed the program. Paulina, a resident at Johnson Cottage and Hannah Garner, daughter of Area Director Lynn Garner, were among the sixteen that were selected from an application process. This was the first group to participate and finish the program. YLDC is meant to strengthen the leadership capacity of high school students. The program included a challenge course, personality profiles, and learning what college is really like. Participants learned leadership skills with a focus on the themes of economic development, education, government and human services. We are very proud of our two young ladies for being good role models for others.
