West Celebrates Pride Day
10.26.2009
What a beautiful day we had for Pride Day at Broyhill Home last Wednesday! The sky was Carolina blue, the sun was shining brightly, and the leaves on the tress were glorious in all their colors. The theme for our day was "A Harvest of Memories." Dathan Arant, child care worker, got us in the prayerful mood by playing "In the Sweet By and By" on his guitar and singing. The group joined in on the chorus. Linda, our great leader, then reminded us of what P.R.I.D.E. stands for in the west: "Prayerful Relationship with the great I Am who Destins us to Eternity." To start off her devotion, Linda called someone out of the room and told them something to remember that they could pass on to others. This person went back to the group and told the person next to her, who then told the person next to them, etc. By the time this had been told around the room the saying was nothing like what had been started. Linda then showed how this related to the Bible verse from Numbers 22:18 - "I cannot go beyond the word of the Lord." Vicki Buckner and Brian Baltzell then sent staff members on a type of scavenger hunt. Instead of having a list of things to find, this hunt was organized a little differently. We were given a sheet from A-Z and were to find items starting with those letters that related to memories of days gone by or things that give us pride. We were divided into cottage teams and the office team. The office team won because combined they had over 100 years of memories to share with the others. Lunch was served with delicious beef tips, salad, twice baked potatoes and desserts. Everyone had a wonderful day and we want to thank everyone who made this day possible!
West Picks "Taters"
10.05.2009
The Western Area held its annual "Tater Picking Day" on Saturday, October 3rd. The gang went to Robbinsville where the good folks from New Hope Baptist Church shared all their potatoes with us. The weather was sunny with just enough breeze to keep us from sweating up a storm. There were two tractors that pulled up the potatoes from the ground and the children (and adults too) really worked hard at trying to keep up. After the potatoes were dug and put into trucks (and there were several trucks filled to the max), we all went to the church for a good lunch. The church served hamburgers, hot dogs, pizza, macaroni and cheese and plenty of desserts. We thank the people of New Hope Baptist Church for always thinking of us when they plant their "taters!"
Broyhill Home Holds Annual Road Race
10.02.2009
The 31st annual Western Area Road Race was held on Monday, September 28th at Broyhill Home. The weather was sunny, the children were excited and Linda Morgan was raring to go! We started out with the .2 mile race for children ages seven and under. They raced around the ballfield with Linda Morgan encouraging them and leading the way. The one mile race was up the hill to the office, around the lake twice and back down to the ballfield. This was for grades 2-5. Any of you who know what the hills are like at Broyhill can surely appreciate the endurance these kids had to have in order to be able to run this course. Here again, Linda was in front of everyone providing encouragement. The two mile race for grades 6-12 and staff members (oh yeah,Linda ran this one too!)went from Broyhill down the road to Haywood Community College and back. Guess who came in first? If you guessed Linda, you are right. She can run circles around everyone! The 1st, 2nd and 3rd highest finishers from each race were awarded medals. T-shirts were presented to everyone and then a sloppy joe supper ended the day. Everyone had a great time! We can't wait to see if Linda will run all the races next year but we are betting she will.
