The recently established North Carolina Baptist Aging Ministry (NCBAM) is funding a weeklong camp bringing youth and aging adults together. NCBAM presented First Baptist Church in Statesville with a grant for “Mission Statesville,” a camp produced by the church inviting middle and high school-aged youth to outreach to senior adults in Statesville.
“This is a tremendous outreach by First Baptist Church, and we are pleased to help undergird their efforts to assist aging adults especially during difficult economic times,” said NCBAM director Sandy Gregory. “It is particularly exciting to see youth take such an active and enthusiastic role.”
NCBAM is a non-residential ministry operated by Baptist Children’s Homes of North Carolina in Thomasville and totally funded by the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. NCBAM aids aging adults across the state to maintain their independence and a quality life. The ministry focuses on providing information and referrals, on connecting the aging and their families with resources to meet needs, and on coordinating practical ministries.
Participants of Mission Statesville will team with youth pastors and directors to visit elder care facilities and homes throughout Statesville assisting with a variety of work projects. Work projects will include a variety of maintenance and repairs in homes, care centers and communities. Grant funds will be used to purchase maintenance and landscaping supplies, gift baskets, and other materials necessary to produce the camp.
The event will culminate with a special intergenerational celebration. The social event will be produced by the youth for the Plaza Community. Activities will include a cook-out, fellowship, and a worship celebration.
“We hope Mission Statesville will heighten the awareness of the needs of elderly while developing the relationships between the younger and older generations,” said First Baptist Church youth pastor Steve Cotton. “We appreciate the support of the North Carolina Baptist Aging Ministry.”
Youth and leaders from Broadstreet United Methodist Church in Statesville and Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church in Greensboro will join First Baptist Church for Mission Statesville. The camp begins Sunday, July 19 and ends Thursday, July 23.
