Young Queens Make a Difference for Children's
Homes
April 21, 2008
The Little Miss Thomasville queens presented $36,534.18 in funds and donated items to Baptist Children’s Homes of North Carolina (BCH) at the annual pageant on Saturday, March 29 at T. Austin Finch Auditorium in Thomasville. The donations will help children living at BCH’s Mills Home campus in Thomasville.
“The generosity shown by these young ladies and the surrounding community is humbling,” said BCH regional director of family services, central area Lynn Garner “Their support grows stronger every year, and it’s helping us to make a difference in the lives of the children in care at Mills Home.”
The queens annually support Mills Home every year through a variety of fund-raisers and projects. This year, the queens organized a “Beach Blast” fund-raiser collecting dozens of beach towels, beach chairs, bottles of sunscreen, water toys and other items from community residents. Children travel to Indian Beach with their child care workers each year for a vacation at BCH’s McNeill Home beach cottage.
In a similar campaign, queens approached members of the community collecting items for their “I Feel Pretty” campaign specifically for girls living at Mills Homes. Hundreds of the community members donated shampoo, make-up, pocket books and other care items.
For the first time, the queens held the “Royalty for Charity Golf Tournament” last November raising proceeds to benefit BCH.
The following area businesses participated in the Little Miss Thomasville Queens’ efforts: Sealy Mattress, Pacific Coaster Feather Company, Hunter Farms, Lowes Home Improvement, Maitland-Smith, the Thomasville HiToms, and Macy’s Department Store.
The Little Miss Thomasville Queens are chosen annually through a special pageant. The pageant is an official preliminary to the Little Miss North Carolina competition. The queens are involved in various community projects in addition to the support they raise for the children at Mills Home.
Since 1885, Baptist Children’s Homes of North Carolina has helped children and families. BCH began with one campus, Mills Home in Thomasville, but now provides services in communities across the state.
