Wall Recognized For Dedication to Children’s Homes

April 11, 2008

Longtime Baptist Children’s Homes of North Carolina (BCH) supporter and trustee Sterling Wall was presented with the 2008 North Carolina Baptist Heritage Award from the statewide childcare institution. The honor was presented to Wall during a ceremony on April 8 at the Grandover Resort and Conference Center in Greensboro.

“Sterling carries on a legacy of dedicated service to Baptist Children’s Homes that began with his great-grandfather,” BCH president Michael C. Blackwell said. No other family has had a longer trustee-association with BCH than has the Wall family. “He exemplifies what is best about a trustee who is a major donor and friend to the institution he serves.”

The Baptist Heritage Award recognizes individuals and couples who represent exemplary giving and service to organizations associated with the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina.

A resident of Lexington and member of First Baptist Church, Wall has served multiple terms as a trustee, often as Chairman of the Properties Committee. He is an expert in the field of property management and forestry. Wall has visited and surveyed BCH’s statewide properties making recommendations as to their best use.

One of Wall’s most valuable contributions was when BCH acquired management of Oak Ranch, the 750-acre residential program for children in Lee County. He saw the potential of the property, which already had two cottages, eight horses, and a mile frontage on the Cape Fear River. Wall saw how it could benefit BCH’s mission of “helping hurting children…healing broken families.” Wall’s expertise and insights were crucial in Oak Ranch coming under the BCH umbrella. Today, Oak Ranch and its unique equine therapy feature are making a difference in the lives of both boys and girls.

“I help BCH however I can, but the real credit goes to Dr. Blackwell and his staff,” Wall said. “I do believe this is probably the most worthy mission in Baptist life. BCH brings these children faith, hope and love. I don’t know of any greater calling. Children are our most precious resource and our future.”

Wall is married to Tina. He has one son, Sterling, Jr., and two daughters, Hunter and Kate. Wall also has one grandson, John Carrington Wall.

Since 1885, Baptist Children’s Homes of North Carolina has helped children and families. BCH began with one campus, Mills Home in Thomasville, but now provides services in sixteen communities across the state.
