Barefoot Receives Oustanding Citizen Award

January 16, 2008

Thomasville resident and Baptist Children’s Homes of North Carolina (BCH) staff member Sam Barefoot was recently honored with the 2008 Thomasville Area Chamber of Commerce’s Outstanding Citizen Award, the chamber’s most prestigious recognition.

“It’s both an honor and it is very humbling at the same time,” said Barefoot. “I’ve had the privilege of being able to serve the community because of the encouragement and support of my wife Pam and my colleagues at Baptist Children’s Homes. It is my hope that my contributions have helped make a difference.”

A native of Raleigh and a graduate of Elon University, Barefoot joined the BCH staff in 1981 as Assistant to the Treasurer. Today, he serves as Treasurer/Chief Financial Officer of the 122-year-old statewide childcare institution and is a member of the President’s Management Group under the leadership of BCH president Michael C. Blackwell.

The recognition was presented on January 10 at the chamber’s 59th annual meeting. Barefoot received the honor for his outstanding volunteer work in the Thomasville community.

Barefoot currently serves on the executive committee of the Tom A. Finch YMCA and has previously served as president and treasurer. He chairs the Academy of Finance at East Davidson High School helping students who wish to pursue careers in the field of finance. He’s also served on East Davidson’s advisory board and coach search committee. Barefoot served as an advisory board member and Parent Teacher Organization president at Brown Middle School. He currently serves on the board of the Davidson County Education Foundation where he has served as president. Barefoot is a member of the Thomasville Medical Center board. And he has served various other community organizations as well as been actively involved in his church.

“There is no one who deserves this honor more than Sam,” said BCH president Blackwell. “His hard work and dedication to children, families, and the community are unparalleled.”

Since 1885, Baptist Children’s Homes of North Carolina has helped children and families in crisis. BCH began with one campus, Mills Home in Thomasville, but now provides services in communities across the state.
