New Family Care Program Serves Moms and Children

New Family Care Program Serves Moms and Children

November 23, 2011

Baptist Children’s Homes has begun Family Care, a new residential program to empower single mothers and their children for success!

Family Care offers supportive group homes for single mothers and their children. The new program provides a goal-focused living environment within a cottage setting. Family Care is specifically structured to help mothers transition to a successful, independent living situation. Many mothers and children are among the “hidden homeless”, moving from sofa to make-shift beds in homes with anyone allowing them to stay. This service will connect a mother and her family with the necessary resources and other community services needed to regain control of her life.

Goals and Expectations... Mothers learn the skills needed to obtain and maintain a stable home, job and income. Baptist Children’s Homes’ counselor and live-in residential manager assist the mother in setting and achieving family goals, developing parenting and job skills, budgeting, resolving transportational needs, and realizing spiritual growth. Mothers commit to work and/or attend school at least 30 hours per week, save a percent of their income, provide appropriate care for their children, and participate in counseling sessions provided by Family Care. Each family will be responsible for cottage chores.

Qualifications... Mothers must be at least 18 years old and have legal custody of their children. Admission qualifications can include lack of financial stability, potential or current homelessness, few or no job skills, and little or no family support.

Cost... Mothers are responsible to pay a monthly $60 program fee after their first month of residence. If outside employment has not been obtained after one month from date of placement, the client will work 10 hours per week at the Baptist Children’s Homes campus to earn credit hours to be applied toward the monthly fee.

Keeping Families Together... Family Care’s ultimate goal is to keep mothers and their children together. Baptist Children’s Homes is dedicated to providing the guidance, counseling and after care to help mothers rebuild their lives and restore their hope while caring for their children.

Children’s Homes Receives Perfect Reaccreditation Score

Children’s Homes Receives Perfect Reaccreditation Score

April 05, 2011

By J. Blake Ragsdale BCH Director of Communications

Baptist Children’s Homes of North Carolina (BCH) strives to achieve excellence in every aspect of its statewide ministry to children and families. The exceptional quality that has been realized by the child care organization was officially confirmed in February when BCH received its reaccreditation by the Council on Accreditation (COA). In addition, the ministry was given a perfect score in its final evaluation.

“Accreditation is the highest form of validation and affirmation of excellence that an agency like ours can have,” says BCH president Michael C. Blackwell. “It affirms that Baptist Children’s Homes is among the elite in providing the highest possible quality of services to children and families.”

COA is an independent, non-for-profit accrediting body accrediting more than 1,500 private and public organizations serving children, individuals and families in the USA and Canada. The reaccreditation process occurs every four years. BCH received its first accreditation in 1987 and has been accredited ever since.

From February 13 to February 16, COA’s three-member review team visited BCH’s statewide locations conducting detailed examinations of the nonprofit’s residential services, administrative functions, and facilities. The review also included interviewing 65 staff members, residents and trustees.

COA representatives were so impressed by their findings that Blackwell received notification of the successful reaccreditation less than 50 hours after reviewers completed their visits.

“We scored perfect on all of the 667 individual standards COA required us to meet,” Blackwell explains. “We did not receive a single written demerit.”

It traditionally takes more time for an organization to receive its results from COA. Representatives must evaluate their findings and prepare a written review citing any issues discovered during the process. In BCH’s case, as explained in the February 18th email sent to Blackwell by COA president Richard Klarberg, there were no faults to cite.

“Baptist Children's Homes of North Carolina, Inc. was expedited through the Pre-Commission Review Report process as a result of not receiving any out of compliance ratings in any of the fundamental practice standards,” Klarberg stated in his email. “Congratulations on this amazing achievement.”

Blackwell says that among the standout comments from reviewers was a glowing statement regarding BCH’s intentional Christian focus. “This particular reviewer said that out of all the faith-based organizations he has examined, none of them were on par with BCH when it came to our commitment to carrying out ministry.”

The reaccreditation process is a necessary one for Baptist Children’s Homes and other agencies offering similar services. Blackwell is more than pleased with BCH’s remarkable results and knows that the excellence that has been realized sends a powerful message.

“It moves Baptist Children’s Homes into a status of excellence that few organizations have achieved,” Blackwell says. “It sets us apart and communicates to our churches, supporters and friends that settling for second best will never be an option when it comes to providing the highest level of care to children and families.”

Help Children Through the Food Roundup

February 01, 2011

Baptist Children’s Homes (BCH) boys and girls know whenever they sit down for a meal, the delicious food that fills their plates is lovingly provided by churches and adults who care. The annual “Food Roundup” has successfully united churches, businesses, and other friends to collect much needed food, supplies and gift cards for BCH residents.

Please help! Your participation makes a difference!

This year's food drive will once again offer an opportunity for churches, businesses and individuals to help provide for the needs of BCH's residents throughout North Carolina. BCH hopes to collect $350,000 in nonperishable food items, paper products and gift cards.

BCH depends on the Food Roundup to offset the immense food costs to provide more than 700,000 meals and snacks to children and developmentally disabled individuals each year.

“Many children come to us from situations where they have not been provided the appropriate care by the adults in their lives,” said BCH president Michael C. Blackwell. “The Food Roundup shows our boys and girls there are adults who love them and are there for them regardless of their circumstances.”

Here’s how to help...

  1. Promote the collection at your church, business or community group. Download flyers and promotional ads at www.bchfamily.org/foodroundup
  2. Publicize the needs list.
  3. Sort and place the food/supplies in sturdy boxes for loading and transport.
  4. Contact your Association office/collection point for the date when they accept donations.
  5. Send the names of any distributors of food or supplies in your area and their contact information to Alan Williams.
  6. Recruit missions, youth and other volunteer groups to help at association offices and other collection points.
  7. BCH needs summer missions teams to help process and inventory the food and supplies at BCH facilities. Need a project in May, June or July? Call the BCH facility nearest you, or call 1.800.476.3669, extension 1277.
  8. BCH is in need of large trucks to help with pickup. If you know of someone who has access to a truck that might be able to help with pickup and/or delivery, call Alan Williams. Questions, contact Alan Williams at 1.800.476.3669, ext. 1277.

Help meet this year's goal to collect at least $350,000 in food, supplies and gift cards. Your effort counts!
